Nap is a direction in the surface of a fabric, as in velvet or corduroy. Seen from one side the fabric looks darker than from the other.
With nap, every piece has to be cut facing the same way. That rules out turning pieces around in the cutting layout, and it raises the fabric consumption noticeably.
