A facing is an extra piece of fabric that finishes an edge from the inside, at a neckline or a closure for example. Its shape follows the edge it sits against.
Facings are derived from the piece they finish. In a vector program or pattern CAD the relevant edge is copied and offset, so the facing comes off the same line as the neckline or front edge it belongs to.
