The fabric width is the distance from selvage to selvage, commonly 140 or 150 centimetres, sometimes 110.
Width decides how the pieces fit next to each other and therefore how much fabric a garment needs. A piece wider than the fabric cannot be cut at all, which is worth checking before buying.
