DPI stands for dots per inch and describes how many dots a printer or scanner places within one inch. In a photo file the value is only a note and says nothing about the actual size of what is pictured.
When you print the reference tiles, the DPI number is not what matters. What matters is that the print runs at 100 percent with scaling switched off, so the squares really measure 8 by 8 centimetres.
