The armhole is the opening in the front and back pieces that the sleeve is set into. Its curve is split across the two pieces, one part on the front and one on the back.
On a digitized piece the length of each armhole edge can be read off the contour. Whether the sleeve cap fits is then a matter of adding the two lengths and comparing them with the cap, which is faster than running a tape measure around the paper.
